Gadgets: Hilti PD 30
filed in Geek Stuff on Nov.03, 2005
I have a new favorite gadget. The Hilti PD 30 Laser Range Meter. Basically it’s a laser tape measure that stores the measurements and it’s SUPER ACCURATE. I’d love to be able to say that I now own it, but in fact I am borrowing it from a friend, so that we can efficiently measure the square footage in the home we are purchasing. Tomorrow is our home inspection.
Kate will be doing all the measuring tomorrow for two reasons. The first, I will be busy taking photographs and following the home inspector around the house like a lost puppy.
“What’s that big thing for?”
“That’s the water meter. It records your water usage for the town so they know how much to charge you each month.”
“We have to pay for water?”
The second reason, obviously, is: I suck at math. Even though it gives a large digital readout of the distance with a precision of ± 1.5 mm, I would find a way to screw it up. However, I am the king of electronic gadgets, and so I get to teach Kate how to use it. The instructions are basically: 1) Hit the center button twice. 2) Write down what it says. I don’t think she’ll have any trouble.

I had one of those and it was loads of fun – we’d wager on who could guess the distance and winner would get free meal, candybar, beer or whatever. Kept us busy for days.
