cool jeansThe family of jeans (or “dungarees” as we called them as kids) in my weekend ensemble either had ink stains, holes in all the wrong places or just disgusting in the most general of ways. After contemplating this morning what I was going to wear to a baby shower later in the day, my wife and I mutually decided that I needed a major overhaul in the Denim Department.

As I was getting ready to go pick up some new jeans, she morphs into Carson from QEFTSG and she says, “Don’t get any dorky jeans.”

me: “Dorky Jeans? What are dorky jeans??”
k: “You know, like those.” – points to what I’m wearing.
me” “Huh? Jeans are jeans. What makes jeans dorky?”
k: “Hun, haven’t you seen any of the latest magazines? They all wear those cool dark jeans. You need some of those. Get cool jeans.”

Well, it just so happens that I had just flipped through the latest GQ magazine at work this week and so I knew exactly the jeans she meant. I was successful in my quest for cool jeans and Carson…er… Kate was very please with my choices.

Have you been jeans shopping lately? I’m not even going to get into how ridiculously overpriced two pieces of denim fabric stitched together are. But, the massive selection they hit you with at the store. Here’s a sampling of what you can choose from in the jeans department…

Levis: Low Rise Boot Fit, Low Rise Straight, Loose Boot Fit, Loose Straight, Relaxed Straight, 501 (The Original), 501 Shrink to Fit, Slim Fit, Regular Fit, Boot Cut, Relaxed Fit, Comfort Fit, Carpenter Loose Straigt, Cargo Loose Straight, Pilot, Vintage Workwear, Flight, 501 Straight Leg, Skinner Low Rise Boot Cut, Houston Loose Boot Cut, Ozzy, Carpenter, Low & Loose, Relaxed, Slouch Boot, Trooper & Baggy.

Lee: 101 Series, 66202 NY, Cargo Jean, Carpenter Jean, Dunbar Loose Fit Boot Cut, Lawton Low Rise Boot Cut, Lee Authentics – Denver Lee Authentics, Dillon Lee Authentics, Nash Lee Authentics, Roscoe Lee Authentics, Loose Straight Leg, Original Blue Jean, Low Rise Original Blue Jean, Regular Fit, Regular Fit Boot Cut, Relaxed Fit Tapered Leg, XLine – Nash, XLine – Roscoe.

I’m not even getting into Diesel or Wrangler or any of the other 200 manufacturers of denim products. Anyone else see something wrong with all this? Whatever happened to just normal jeans? I’m all for capitalism and consumerism, but should it really be so prevalant in something as simple as jeans??
